The temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) allows you to remain in Australia to live, study or work after you have finished your studies. This visa is not points tested and doesn’t require an employer sponsor, is usually the cheapest and easiest work visa to apply for.
The visa has two streams: Graduate Work stream and Post-Study Work stream. The length of your stay will depend on which stream you apply for.
WHO CAN APPLY?
- Be under 50 years of age
- Hold an eligible visa
- Have held a student visa in the last 6 months
- Have a recent qualification in a CRICOS-registered course
- Meet additional requirements of the relevant stream
- Nominate one stream only – it is not possible to change visa streams after you apply
- Attach specified evidence when you apply
- Have English level IELTS 6, with no score lower than 5 (or equivalent English test) – unless you hold a passport for UK, USA, NZ, Ireland or Canada. The English test must have been taken within 3 years of your application
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TWO STREAM?
Graduate Work Stream
This stream is for applicants who have recently graduated from a course relating to an occupation where there is a skill shortage in Australia.
- You can work and stay in Australia up to 18 months
- Hold a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list
Post-Study Work Stream
This stream is for applicants who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution.
- Work and Stay between 2 and 4 years in Australia, based on your qualification
- Hold a recent degree from a CRICOS-registered course
RECENT VISA UPDATE?
Only available for Post-Study Work stream. Students who have graduated from a regional institution, and resided (including all work and study) for at least two years in a regional area immediately before applying for their second 485 visa. Or current post-study 485 visa holders who graduated from a regional institution, and who will have resided (including all work and study) for at least two years in a regional area immediately before applying for their second 485 visa.
